90/100Worth reading despite being cancelled.Continue on AniListI finished reading it a few days ago. I was thinking a lot about what to write for the review, but I decided to keep it as simple as possible with minimal spoilers, so that if you are wondering whether it's still worth a read, maybe you can decide based on this review.
I really loved the art style which is what drew me to the manga in the first place. The story and characters hooked me very fast. The characters were compelling because they come across as very real - I mean, people I could see being in my own day to day life as opposed to superheroes, ninjas and more (not that I don't love those kind of characters too). Their complexity felt difficult to understand sometimes the same way that it’s difficult to understand family or friends.
I liked that I was reading something with no grand villains either. I mean, there are no murderers with sad backstories or serial criminals. I think we need those kind of stories every so often. Naturally though there were nicer characters and ones that did things you disagree with, but once again it's the kind of things you would have to deal with in real life too (in some way, shape or form at least).
My absolutely favorite part was how it incorporated music and that I could easily look up and listen to all the songs that were mentioned. I opted for piano covers, of course. I think if the author could create under less pressure than they may have felt for a weekly publication on a platform like Shonen Jump, it would’ve definitely been something (even more) special.
Sadly by the end, maybe the last ten chapters or so, I could tell the author was being rushed. There were characters left unexplored, but instead of just focusing on the ones we got (giving strong conclusions to their stories, or at the very least a sense of that), the author tried to summarize some others… it did work in one or two cases (I mean the single chapters dedicated to giving depth to other interesting characters), but then there was no time left to properly express where they seemed to want to go with the main character? At least, that is how I felt by the end.
I’m not sure what their intention was and I’m not sure how chaotic it must’ve been with discussions about having your manga cancelled before you planned it to… But even then it’s such an interesting story and ending. Life doesn’t always wrap itself up neatly anyway, so I’m still satisfied with what the manga was able to convey.
I’ll remember these characters for sure and I’ll remember this art style and whenever I listen to some of those piano covers again, I'll think of this manga fondly!
I decided to give it a 9/10, even though I can't say that about the last ten or so chapters, but overall my experience reading it was just that memorable. Although I have to say I think I read it at a really perfect time for me (like this was exactly the kind of thing I was looking for).
