In a world where most people who become adventurers do so in their teens, a guild employee in his thirties, Rick Gladiator, seeks to become an adventurer instead. After receiving unimaginably brutal training from the legendary party renowned as the strongest on the continent, Orichalcum Fist, he ends up with combat abilities worthy of S-rank status despite starting out as an F-rank rookie!

70/100A fun watch, very bingeable, much okContinue on AniListThis is a fun show to watch. It is not groundbreaking, or trying to impress with something it is not.
If you need an anime to give you some motivation to help push you to do something, this will deliver. It wears its meaning on its sleeve, and it can browbeat you with it often. It has enjoyable fight scenes, and training montages.
This is a show about about the power of perseverance, wrapped up with fun characters, enjoyable art style, and pacing issues.
It has flaws. But what show doesn't? It has some fan service, some plot holes, and a few bland one-off characters. No singular bad moment stays around long enough to leave a bad taste though. The pacing though is a bit strange in the second half. The first part of it is fairly well paced, and the story moves quickly along. The second half gets mired down a bit. It gives us time to learn about about some of the supporting cast, and their history, and makes the ending very rewarding. But it could have been shortened by a bit, and I would have liked to see some more of what the second half of the party was doing on their side mission.
The cast is enjoyable, but there are not enough episodes to make them feel more 3D. The magic system is nothing new either. It is not trying to re-invent the wheel with any concept. But it is great for old farts like myself who sometimes need to her that it is never to late to start something you have been dreaming to do.
One thing that I do want to explicitly say that I like about this show is that it does a good job showing the difference between talent and practice. The Party are all people who are talented, but put in the work to make themselves the pinnacle of their craft. The main character is someone who has started becoming an adventure at 30 years old, with no innate talent*, but has the will to not give up and push through his own mental blocks.
When he goes for his first test to raise his ranks, he is able to see difference that his hard work has made. And what happens when people rely on talent, and don't put in the time to practice. These are the main entry-level villains of the show, slightly less menacing than Saturday morning cartoon villains, but they are simply there to prove a point, not to be the big bad. Watching them get their comeuppance is very rewarding and fun.
I personally hope that this anime gets more seasons.
This is my first review, I hope that you give this show a chance.
Side observation: I have just gotten back into anime after a long break. It seems that there is now a higher influence of German fantasy compared to English fantasy in character naming, character design, and fighting styles. It is refreshing. Threw me for a loop when I noticed it.

45/100Interesting older hero gets by on willpower alone animation story and character development were all lacklusterContinue on AniListThe concept of this anime was interesting. An older hero who kind of waited too long to chase his dreams and who gets by on luck alone. I do feel like there are far too many anime that focus on an extremely narrow band of years in a person’s life. Usually high school age students. There is nothing wrong with some of that but life is a spectrum. And writing endless narratives that end when high school does I feel simply does not send the right message about life. Add to that the fact that there is a growing pile of older anime fans now and writing to a more diverse crowd makes sense.
Sadly that one core concept is about the only thing this anime had going for it. The animation wasn’t bad, but it also wasn’t great. It was bland and lifeless. There were a lot of scenes with talking to pad out the animation. And you might say, well talking is important to drive the story and develop the characters. Yes, it is. Which is why it is a shame that this talking did very little of that. The characters risk nothing. There is no struggle, no strife. Nothing that the characters must overcome. We get constant references to a two year training montage. But even that has no real risk to it. The character’s primary teacher has the ability to resurrect him from even death. So, flawless training that is at most physically uncomfortable with no risk at all.
I think this anime is trying to be wish fulfillment. The world we live in is so difficult and oftentimes hopeless. Wouldn’t it be great if we had the ability to grow to our full potential without any of that twisted pain? Well, that isn’t how growth works. Not at any level. The discomfort IS the growth. Feeling like you aren’t getting it and pushing back against that feeling is where growth occurs. This isn’t shown at all.
Then when we move past the training you’ve got the story. Or do you? Exactly what story is there to go on here? A band of friends tries to gather 6 jewels together to fight a dragon to grant a wish...Hey! Wait a minute! Take that wig off right now Dragon Ball! Though that is a bit disrespectful to Dragon Ball because that has some of what I’m criticizing this for lacking. They don’t explore the motivation for fighting the boss dragon at all. Did it kill someone you care about? Do you just want the akashic records (aka wish)? And if so for what purpose? Dead mom? Fix poverty? Anything? Bigger junk? The world may never know because it isn’t developed.
The story is padded out with threadbare cliche’s and barely detectable character development. And the anime’s arc is ended on one of the most tired, old, useless depictions ever, a bloody tournament arc. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
