REVIEWS

67/100cutscenes for a game that doesn't existContinue on AniListThe first part of the Igloo Trilogy of Trilogies. If you are hungry for more early Universal Century content or are looking for some shorter Gundam vignettes Igloo:The Hidden One Year War (I:THOYW) is a solid choice. I:THOYW is a set of three somewhat connected episodes each focused on the testing of an experimental weapon (in order: big gun, mobile tank/suit, mobile suit). I picked this up after going straight from Wing to Victory and wanting something shorter to watch on the side that wasn't 50 episodes.
The animation elephant in the room:
The animation looks like it comes from a mid 2000s game (hence the review summary). In some scenes it looks fine, in others (especially any that focus on characters faces) it can feel very very dated. If you can't stand the style, don't bother watching as it won't get better. Personally it didn't bother me too much, I have some vague nostalgia for the animation style which probably helped. The characters:
The main continuing characters are all alright. Oliver is a bit bland but likable, the captain is vaguely entertaining, Monique is cool, there is also another guy there too.The stars are the spotlight characters. Each episode focuses on a new pilot who has some connection to the weapon they're testing. You have the old gunner wanting to prove gunners have still got it, the washed up tank ace who couldn't transition his skills to mobile suits, and the strangely invested Zudah pilot. They get the most screen time and the most personality They also all die
The mechanics:
The Jormungand looks like a snake and is a big gun. The most tragic of the units as it was outdated by the time it entered service as the age of the mobile suit had come. Reminds me of the german big railway guns in WW2 that were very big and cool but also very impracticable and expensive compared to aircraft. It was cool, but I'm not super interested in it.The hildolfr was a surprisingly agile big tank with a hidden mobile suit inside. Big fan. looked like it was drifting around the desert.
The Zudah was sent out to die. literally too fast to live. the epitome of burn bright and die fast. more of a firework then a mobile suit. I liked how obsessed and insecure Duvall was with it. He looked like he was ready to fight anyone who insulted his poor explosive suit. The state of pure bliss he reached after being in one battle was also very entertaining.
Other stuff:
The zeon perspective on the one year war was a new one for me. I liked seeing the away from the front stuff with the space logistics and the propaganda. I like the timeline Igloo uses for pre oyw more then the timeline origin uses. Conclusion:
If you like seeing strange and unique mobile weapons in action and don't mind some dated animation, give Igloo The Hidden One Year War a go. It's far from perfect, but I liked it.
