60/100"Season 0" is a fun, often brutal ride that gives you some insight on the origins of the series.Continue on AniListYu-Gi-Oh! "Season 0" as it's called by some fans boasts quite a few differences from the trading card anime we're all familiar with. For those of you unfamiliar with this version of the show, it features one extra member of the gang who was apparently too moe for the later series, is often much more gruesome than its successor, and sticking more closely to the manga, features all manner of games, including but not limited to an extremely early, extremely simple version of Duel Monsters. Also Kaiba has green hair.
...
Writing: As mentioned prior, this series sticks to the manga more closely than Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters does. That said, things are still toned down from the manga version at least somewhat, so this series falls somewhere inbetween in terms of content. For example, where a villain might be set on fire in the manga, here they're presented a traumatic illusion that makes them think and feel as if they were set on fire. Things like that. Yami Yugi is still Game Batman, though, dishing out cold and brutal street justice to those who are asking for it.
There's a certain charm to seeing the Pharaoh as Chief Badass, rather than the more romantic and human version we see trying to learn about the mysteries of his past in Duel Monsters. While this series does more deeply explore a lot of the early arcs before the start of Duel Monsters, such as the origin of Joey and Yugi's friendship, make no mistake, it is not in the same canon, as the presence of the extra character and punk-phase Kaiba's interactions with Yugi prove. Oh, right, I was critiquing the writing, wasn't I? Overall it's fairly average for a shonen series, but some of the solutions to the games are quite clever and will keep you guessing.
Animation: Not stellar, not abysmal. It's the 90's, what're you gonna do? Yugi's still hoarding the world supply of hairspray, though.
Sound: This series was never dubbed, so expect no Dan Green. The Japanese actors do a fine job of capturing the characters, though, even if Yami Yugi's voice is a bit on the stereotypical side as far as angsty young badasses speaking Japanese go. The music, I dare say, is a strong point of the series, much more unique than that present in Duel Monsters, and with a transformation theme that would have been iconic had this show made it to the west. It's an earworm, that.
...
If you've ever wanted to see a bishonen Two-Face take on the role of Batman and dish out street justice with gambling, you're looking at the right series. The series is as bipolar as can be, from its cute and saccharin school scenes to the dark and gritty dealings with injustice. I recommend it as a fun watch for anyone interested in this kind of dichotomy, as well as (obviously) for fans of the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise who want to see the origins of the series in animated form.

70/100Psychopath Double Personality Kid Beats Corrupt A-holes By Killing Them With Strategy GamesContinue on AniListHello everybody on anilist and welcome to whatever this blog is. The names I go by are kona. This blog is going to be about Yu-Gi-Oh, I've been a fan of Yu-Gi-Oh since I was a young shounen, I would watch a few episodes of Duel Monsters in my childhood whenever it was tv, and buy/collect the trading card game as well so I know what I'm talking about, guys (not really don't listen to this idiot) so introductions a side I hope you enjoy this review it's pretty short
Now when I "the great and only kona the first" of anilist say Yu-Gi-Oh, something automatically springs to your cranium, you're like (wow assumptions you know it's not good to assume things, how dare you assume common thoughts of the otaku community) "ahh yesh, Yu-Gi-Oh the famous show that was broadcasted across every single first world western country by the corporate television giant known as 4Kids (at that time, can't say it is nowadays, where you at 4Kids come and censor our shounen anime to the extreme) you know Yu-Gi-Oh series with 224 episodes that originally aired in Japan in the early 2000s; no no no I'm not talking about that one, I'm actually to everyone's surprise going to talk about the mysteriously infamous Season 0 which most otaku's call it by on the web.
Yu-Gi-Oh season 0 is basically Yu-Gi-Oh before it was Yu-Gi-Oh before it was a trading card game before it would have some trashy alternative clones that recently aired (Vrians ofc lol) now you're thinking "Kona-sama-kun-senpai my lord, if this isn't about Yu-Gi-Oh then what the frickidity heck is this about then) well I'm glad you asked fellow anon, this show is still Yu-Gi-Oh but only a tiny bit of it is; the show actually does show some "duel monsters" that are in the other one but this Yu-Gi-Oh is all about games in general.
In my opinion Yu-Gi-Oh Season 0 is immensely different from the bigger one as Kaiba is more of an asshole, twisted and evil, Yugi sounds more puny and weak than usual, there's an extra character called Nosaki Miho which was completely written off in the "original" series. Oh, yeah also Kaiba's has green hair, I'm not even joking his is goddamn green, and I'm not talking about a dark shade of green; I'm talking about a luminescent green that would give a traffic warden a run for their money.
The story as usual goes: our main protagonist as you can tell from his extremely extremist hair-do thing that would make hair stylists envious of him, click now to find out his secret!! Yes, I'm talking about Yugi Moto. Yugi finds an ancient artifact called The Millennium Puzzle in his grandpa's game shop, Yugi a lover of puzzle games does what he does best and solves the puzzle then wished for friendship then only to get possessed by an ancient Egyptian pharoh named yami who has no recollection of himself and his past life and also is the complete opposite of Yugi evil, badass and confident
Yugi, Anzu, Jounouchi, Honda and filler character Miho love there daily lives but somehow manage to always end up encountering misfortune and bad luck when they are confronted by Bullies, Mafia Gangsters, Rich Scumbags (cough cough Kaiba cough) and gruesome bloodthirsty criminals and no other than Yami is here to save the day by challenging them to a game of some sort or puzzle because you know a dangerous serial killer is going to be stopped with a game of chess and when the bad guy loses which is all the time Yami ends up always turning them insane or killing them with the power of a shadow game because of this the anime is kinda of predictable, but it still super enjoyable to watch because it has more of a violent and sinister tone to it than what you would think.
Yami is much different than in Duel Monsters the Yami you know is a hero of justice and destroys all evil, but this one is a savage psychopath who gets his kicks from making the villain lose his sanity by playing mind games with him and giving them hallucinations or just straight up murdering them after all his is the king of games so he can never lose
Now let's talk about the filler character known as Miho. She is a dumb childish generic anime girl with blue hair, who is so gullible and innocent I'm surprised she is made it this far in life but even if her character is cliche I think she fitted well in the series because Honda's character had a crush on her, it made his persona seem less useless as he had some actual motive unlike the other honda
What's also different is that the art style is completely different from the 2000s series because it's very low budget which makes it reminiscent of 90s animation style, very muddy and low colour also basically it's ugly. It's not anything impressive for its time, but regardless of this if you set aside the animation it's worth a watch
Thanks for reading this mini-review or whatever this was, see ya next time. I reject writing this, sorry for the cringe. I wrote it a long time ago

100/100More than a card game. A story about courage, friendship and faith.Continue on AniListYu-Gi-Oh! More than a card game
Review
Yu-Gi-Oh! was the very first anime that truly captured me as a kid. I remember being glued to the screen, fascinated not only by the duels and the cards, but also by the intensity of Yugi and his friends. For many people it might be “just” an anime about a card game, but for me, it was always so much more. It had mystery, heart, and that sense of adventure that makes you want to believe in something bigger than yourself.
Why it mattered to me
- Friendship over victory. The show constantly reminded me that winning isn't everything, standing by your friends and trusting them is what counts.
- Courage and self-belief. Yugi (and his alter ego) taught me that believing in yourself can turn impossible situations around.
- Loyalty and honor. The characters act with loyalty and an odd kind of honor, even when the stakes are absurdly high.
“Sometimes the real duel is believing in yourself.”
As a kid, I didn’t understand it deeply, but I felt it. Every duel was more than a game, it was a test of character. Watching Yugi face impossible odds and somehow find a way through them inspired me to be brave in my own small ways. Whether it was a test at school or standing up for myself, I carried a little bit of that “Heart of the Cards” spirit with me.
Personal note
To this day, I still keep my cards like a treasure (some are a bit worn from shuffling them during school breaks ?). When I started working, I didn’t hesitate to treat myself by buying the manga it felt like reconnecting with a piece of my childhood, but with a whole new perspective.
Yu-Gi-Oh! Is fun, epic, dramatic, and sometimes wonderfully ridiculous (yes, saving the world with cards sounds silly and that’s perfect). Its magic is the mix of heart and spectacle: it makes you believe, cheer, and feel that with strategy, faith, and friends by your side, any obstacle can be overcome.
Final thought
For me, it will always hold a special place in my heart. It’s more than nostalgia: it’s the anime that taught me that sometimes the truest victory is simply not giving up. Even now, years later, Yu-Gi-Oh! Still makes me smile every time I see a duel.
It reminds me of simpler days, when imagination and friendship were everything. It’s proof that the stories we grow up with can still inspire us long after we’ve grown up ourselves. I think that’s why it remains timeless because believing in the “Heart of the Cards” is really about believing in ourselves.
