70/100Sometimes stupid actually is funny, I guess o.OContinue on AniListThis anime is bad. No really, it is terrible. Yet somehow I kept watching it, and enjoyed myself more often than I care to admit.
The core idea is stupid, and normally I dislike stupidity, but maybe I was in exactly the right mood to enjoy it today (or maybe I am at the right level of autistic burnout that something this cheesy is exactly right)...anyway, you have Krai, a supposedly legendary leader of the strongest party, who is actually weaker than some background extras and survives entirely on freakish luck, relic gimmicks and relentless misunderstandings. People think he is a genius mastermind pulling strings from the shadows, when in reality he is panicking, whining about wanting to retire and stumbling into success like a man who tripped over a rock and accidentally discovered gravity. If you enjoy humour built on everyone taking the wrong lesson from what they see, this show leans into that very hard and never seems to tire of repeating the same chaotic pattern.
On a technical level it is painfully average. The worldbuilding feels hollow, important relationships are muddy, and the tone wobbles between parody, straight fantasy and half-hearted drama in a way that never quite gels. Characters can be irritating, especially Krai, who often comes across less as whimsical and more as hopeless and spineless, while everyone else twists themselves into knots to justify how brilliant he must be, even when the audience can clearly see that he is flailing. The story frequently feels like it is about nothing in particular, just hopping from incident to incident as the gods of plot armour continue to indulge him and reward his incompetence with absurd victories.
And yet, in spite of all of that, it is weirdly enjoyable. Some episodes land genuinely funny gags, the misunderstandings occasionally escalate to such absurd heights that you cannot help but laugh, and there is a scrappy charm in how committed the show is to its one joke. The supporting cast, while inconsistently written, can be fun when the script remembers to play up their quirks rather than just orbit Krai in blind worship, and there are moments where their reactions are funnier than the punchline itself. The action is serviceable, the music is lively enough, and if you go in expecting light, slightly silly entertainment rather than a clever deconstruction, it works well as a background watch that you can half ignore without missing anything important.
So yes, this anime is bad, no really it is terrible, riddled with shallow writing, uneven humour and a protagonist who will either amuse you or drive you up the wall. But it is also oddly entertaining, easy to binge and occasionally laugh out loud funny, which is why, against my better judgement, I ended up giving it a 7 out of 10 and do not feel entirely guilty about that decision.
